BOOKIES SALUTE DENMAN
TALK ABOUT IT IN OUR HORSE RACING FORUMS
Denman ranges from evens to 13/8 to repeat his Cheltenham Gold Cup triumph in 2009.
Ridden by Sam Thomas, the 9/4 chance took over at the head of affairs with just over a circuit to go and he poured on the pressure up front.
Reigning title-holder Kauto Star looked in trouble coming down the hill but finished well for second, while Neptune Collonges flew for third, giving trainer Paul Nicholls a famous one-two-three.
Denman is now evens with big-race sponsors totesport for 2009 and Ladbrokes are in full agreement with that quote, but Skybet offer 13/8.
Runner-up Kauto Star is 7/2 and Neptune Collonges is 20/1 with Skybet .
Totesport!
spokesman Damian Walker said: "Denman is the new force in staying chases and we expect him to be the one to beat again next season.
"He seemed to break Kauto Star on the second circuit, although the runner-up probably didn't jump as well as usual on the tacky ground.
"Neptune Collonges has run a stormer in third and we make him just 8/1 for next year.
"Denman proved easy to back and all the money was for Kauto Star, so the result was a winning one for the sponsors although Denman was a loser in our ante-post book," dded Walker.
"Pre-race turnover estimates of between £25-30million on the race are probably about right if our figures are anything to go by.
"The increased interest in this year's race has certainly given the whole sport a lift and we can't wait for the rematch next year."
That view was echoed by Skybet 's PR Director Dale Tempest who said: "Denman was awesome but the ground was in his favour and the betting world can't wait for the rematch."
Meanwhile Ladbrokes were toasting Denman's victory, saying it saved them from their darkest day in Festival history as the nation backed Kauto Star in their masses.
David Williams, spokesman for Ladbrokes, said: "Denman was our saviour. We thought the betting and the race would be a lot closer but we were under siege from Kauto Star fans all day.
"In the end we've come out on top. We were staring down the barrel of a horror result and have dodged the bullet. We're still catching our breath."
Ladbrokes laid one bet of £200,000 to a high-rolling Kauto Star fan and industry predictions of a record-breaking betting race were proved accurate.
"It was a crazy day in betting shops up and down the land. We were packed out and the mega bets we saw made even our stony traders go weak at the knees," added Williams.
Some punters gained consolation by backing Nicholls to saddle the first three home.
"We only offered it as a bit of fun but it's backfired. It's great news for punters on what's been a pretty grim day for them," said Williams.
William Hill also had a fantastic day and their spokesperson Kate Miller said: "The Gold Cup usually makes the difference for us winning or losing at Cheltenham and this was a massive result for the company."
PR director David Hood added: "As early money came in for some of the outsiders of the field, Denman proved friendless with the public and his price began to drift from its opening 13-8.
"Money came in hard and late for favourite Kauto Star, with one £20,000 cash bet laid in a London shop while Denman continued to drift in the market before eventually going off at 9-4.
"The race was an incredible spectacle and the re-match is already been promised for 12 months time."
Coral UK 's David Stevens surmised: "The defeat of Franchoek in the Triumph Hurdle was welcomed by us after punters had hit us hard in the Coral Cup won by Naiad Du Misselot.
"However, the day was dominated by the Gold Cup and having kept Denman on side since the Hennessy, the right one of the 'big two' definitely won as far as we're concerned.
"All in all, we probably just edged it but credit to all the punters who completed the betting marathon."
Paddy Power believed the Gold Cup result caused a £2million swing in their profits.
"It definitely turned into a bookies meeting. The public spoke the words Kauto Star as they got stuck in and Denman drifted like the Marie Celeste," reckoned Paddy Power himself.
