MISTER LOOKS A TOP PICK
TALK ABOUT IT IN OUR HORSE RACING FORUM
It is hard to eke out some value from Friday's card at Aintree.
Albertas Run, Captain Cee Bee and the imperious Master Minded all look solid in their respective races and I see little point in recommending something against them at an artificially fancy price on the chance they have an off day.
That leaves a Topham where they bet 10/1 the field, the Sefton Hurdle which could throw up three or four possible winners and the closing bumper.
So the race to focus on is the staying handicap chase and Irish raider Mister Top Notch makes a good deal of appeal despite his prominence in both the weights and the betting.
A more than useful novice last term, he has really come to himself since the turn of the year having notched three wins from four outings.
His one defeat came in the Irish Henessy at Leopardstown, where he still finished a creditable fourth despite having been left slightly short in the build-up due to an abscess on his foot.
Winning service was then resumed in some style next time at Fairyhouse where he exploited a very lenient mark over hurdles.
Trainer Davy Fitzgerald said afterwards that he has never had the horse so well and the fact that he was leaning towards taking on the really big guns in Thursday's totesport Bowl hints at just what sort of regard he is held.
Trying to defy a mark of 154 in this contest looks much less taxing and he gets the vote to see off some in-form rivals who have been operating at lower levels.
