AINTREE FRIDAY - JUMP IN FOR JACK
TALK ABOUT IT IN OUR HORSE RACING FORUM
It will be very exciting to see Master Minded back in action in Friday's John Smith's Melling Chase at Aintree.
He produced a superb performance to win the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham when he took your breath away, some people even say it was the best performance in the history of that prestigious race.
It was a superb display and you have to give the connections of Voy Por Ustedes full marks for taking him on again.
It could be the step up to two-and-a-half miles will suit Alan King's charge better than the minimum trup nowadays but that said, Paul Nichols felt two-and-a-half miles was Master Minded's trip earlier in the campaign.
The favourite will take the world of beating and it was surprising to see Monet's Garden swerve this race in favour of a crack at Kauto Star on Thursday.
Nicky Richards' grey is a real solid yardstick at Friday's trip and won this race last year. He loves the track too and had Master Minded been slightly off his game, Monet's Garden would be there to pick up the pieces.
It speaks volumes that connections of the grey opted to the swerve race and is clearly a reflection of the reverence in which Master Minded is now held in.
You would not believe before Cheltenham that any horse would rather face Kauto Star than his stablemate.
The big betting race of the day is the John Smith's Topham Chase. It is a great spectacle over the National fences and Paul Nicholls has a strong team for the race but the one I like is Pak Jack.
He has a very good chance of rewarding each-way suppprt as he has a tremendous record over these big fences.
He was second in the race a couple of years ago behind Liberthine and ran well behind Scots Grey in the Foxhunters last year.
Pak Jack returned to the course to finish third behind Mr Pointment in the Becher Chase back in November when probably not quite staying the three miles three furlongs.
The drop back to two miles five here is ideal and you see year in year out, horses coming back here and running well time and time again.
Pak Jack seems to thrive here and off a light weight, and having been laid out for the race, he looks very interesting indeed. He is sure to run a big race and will be hard to keep out of the frame.
