TAUNTON: 2.20 Big Max, 2.55 Leading Attraction, 3.30 Big Ralph, 4.05 Salinas, 4.40 Ede's, 5.15 High Peak, 5.50 Earth Dream.

Double: Kauto Star and Leslingtaylor.

Kauto Star might have lost his tag of invincibility in the Gold Cup, but Paul Nicholls' brilliant inmate is taken to light up the first day's action at the Aintree Festival.

His defeat behind Denman at Cheltenham came as a surprise to many, but the intuitive feeling was that he simply never sparkled as he has on pretty much every visit to the course in the past two years.

Therein lies the dilemma ahead of the totesport Bowl - for backing horses after they have failed to shine is not always an advisable plan of attack in the ongoing battle with the bookies.

Kauto Star did not look entirely at home when beaten at Aintree earlier in the year either, although giving a stone to Monet's Garden over an inadequate trip was probably an impossible task.

The deciding factor in plumping for Kauto Star is that conditions should be ideal in this Grade Two event and Nicholls is exuding confidence.

Many will want to take him on, but it is worth remembering he was considered one of the best horses we had ever seen less than a month ago.

The John Smith's 250th Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices' Hurdle holds Grade One status and promises to develop into one of the best races of the week.

Supreme Novices' Hurdle runner-up Binocular and Triumph hero Celestial Halo are the form horses by virtue of their Cheltenham performances.

But as Celestial Halo had to do things the hard way from the front, Binocular can atone for his near-miss behind Captain Cee Bee back in his own age group.

Inglis Drever is patently not as brilliant at Liverpool as he is elsewhere - he has failed to win in his last three races here - but finding one to take him on with in the John Smith's Great Float Social Club Liverpool Hurdle is extremely difficult.

The public get their first sighter of the towering National fences in the John Smith's Fox Hunters' Chase, in which Buckby Lane is an interesting runner.

Quite what his recent point-to-point form amounts to is open to debate, but he was formerly very useful under Rules and is the bold-jumping type to excel.

Leslingtaylor will appreciate the return to this track when he drops in grade for the Silver Cross Prams Red Rum Handicap Chase and should go close for John Quinn.

Palomar will appreciate the return to a flatter track in the John Smith's Handicap Hurdle, while Whiteoak can beat the boys in the Citroen C5 Mersey Novices' Hurdle.

Ede's can bring up a five-timer in the southwest-racing.com Handicap Hurdle at Taunton, while Oasis Wind can win the ladbrokescasino.com Conditions Stakes at Leicester.

Paul Cole has been among the winners of late and this son of the lightning-fast Oasis Dream shaped very well on a number of occasions as a juvenile.

Providing he has made decent progress over the winter, this promising sort should continue to pay his way.

The other Flat meeting is staged on the all-weather, where the improving Rose Row makes plenty of appeal in the Kempton For Conferences Handicap.
