NEWCASTLE UNITED 5 CARDIFF CITY 1
MATCH REPORT
ComeOnSpurs.com, 6 Feb 2010
Local boy Andy Carroll and Danish striker Peter Lovenkrands engineered a 5-1 hammering of Cardiff City as Newcastle went six points clear at the top of the Championship.
Newcastle manager Chris Haughton fielded all of his six January transfer signings, giving club debuts to Leon Best and Fitz Hall and a home debut to Patrick van Aanholt.
But it was Andy Carroll who broke the deadlock, scoring after just three minutes.

Hall nodded on Danny Cuthries' corner to Kevin Nolan who flicked the ball to Carroll who finished the move, netting from close range.
Carroll should have made it two barely three minutes later but hit the post. It didn't matter though, as the rebound was scrambled into the Cardiff goal by one of their own players, Gabor Gyepes.
The Bluebirds almost got back into the game through Ross McCormack but his shot smacked off the bar and was cleared.
But Newcastle made it three on the quarter hour mark, Carroll agains, this time with a powerful header from Danny Simpson's beautifully delivered cross.
Cardiff hit the bar again, this time through full-back Adam Matthews as they tried to force a goal before half time.
After the interval it was Cardiff who started the brighter, with Newcastle goalkeeper needing to be alert to deny ex Magpie Michael Chopra.
However the visitors lacked penetration, and substitute Peter Lovenkrands made it four, then five, bagging his own brace as Carroll was denied a hat trick by Gyepes' goalline clearance as the tiome ticked away.
Cardiff subtsitute Aaron Wildig denied Newcastle a clean sheet with a goal in the penultimate minute of normal time, but it will have come as little consolation to a completely demolished Cardiff City side.
